As a new year begins, it brings with it a fresh start and an opportunity to reflect on the previous year.
Setting goals and reflecting on our progress are essential practices for personal and academic growth. In elementary classrooms, these skills play a crucial role in nurturing students’ self-awareness, motivation, and achievement. Check out these New Year Activities !
1. Understanding SMART Goals:
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. When setting goals with students, it is important to ensure the goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound to provide a sense of urgency. We talk about how the second semester is our halftime and that the third and fourth quarters are extremely important in winning a game. (I love using sports analogies!)
2. Promoting Reflection:
Reflection allows students to assess their progress, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments. Using these reflection worksheets, students are encouraged to reflect on their classroom performance and what they can do to improve their learning. Students become invested in their learning, giving them the control of their learning and improving.
3. Promotes a Growth Mindset:
Teaching students about the power of a growth mindset can significantly impact their goal-setting and reflection processes. Teaching students to reflect helps to promote resilience, perseverance, and a positive attitude towards challenges.
